Other Information

Andries Ridder witnessed the will of Henry Sluyter dated Feb 16, 1717/8.[xviii] Other witnesses were John Sluyter and David Lawson. All three appeared before the Deputy Commissioner for Cecil County, MD, on Mar. 5, 1721 to prove the will. Henry Sluyter, together with brother-in-law Samuel Bayard, was a gentleman plantation owner and trader who resided on the Labadie Tract of Bohemia Manor, situated in Cecil County, MD. Samuel Bayard’s will, dated Jan. 17, 1716/7, was witnessed by “Conrad Ridder,” presumably Andrew’s father, Conrad Ritter. [xix]

On June 7, 1722, Andrew Rider signed a deed of lease for a 125-acre tract of land situated on Bohemia Manor (Cecil Co., MD). [xx]   The deed stipulated that the duration of the lease was to last for the natural lives of Andrew, Peter and Joseph Rider.   Andrew’s sons Joseph and Peter were not yet born, thus we know that the Peter and Joseph referred to here were Andrew’s brothers. The tract was named Andrew’s Comeby.

Andrew Rider witnessed a deed of lease dated Nov 9, 1724, for 130 acres in Bohemia Manor from Ephraim Augustine Herman to tenant farmer Joseph Tilafro. [xxi]

Andrew’s father, Conrad Rutter, moved with his other children Elizabeth, Joseph, Peter and Conrad Jr. to Leacock Township, Lancaster Co., PA, around 1728. [xxii]

In 1740’s, during the hostilities with France, Andrew was a member of the Cecil County Militia under Capt. Peter Bayard. [xxiii]

The administrative bond of Andrew Rider produced by Mary Rider and Peter Rider, his Administrators, was dated Jan. 1, 1750. Manassah Loage and James Boyles placed sureties of 500 £ Sterling for the estate on 1 January, 1750. The document was recorded on 26 March, 1750. [xxiv]

An inventory of the estate of Andrew Rider was recorded on April 2, 1750. The inventory was created by Mary Rider and Peter Rider, and the estate was valued at 346 pounds, 11 shillings, and 6 pence. Henry McCoy and James Boyle were listed as next of kin. [xxv]

The account showing the distribution of Andrew Rider’s estate was submitted by the Administrators: Mary Rider, his widow, and Peter Rider. Children are identified as: Peter Rider and Joseph Rider, sons of age; Andrew Rider, about 18; James Rider, about 13; and Rebecca Rider Boyles, no age given. Document is dated 6 August, 1750 and shows an estate balance of 334 £, 9 Shillings, and 3 1/4 Pence. [xxvi]

All the children of Andrew Rider (except James) joined the other heirs of Conrad Rutter (Sr.), deceased, in a deed dated Apr 5, 1762, the purpose of which was to officially acknowledge that Conrad Jr. was the sole owner of the 208-¼ acre section of the Rutter plantation in Leacock Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, where Conrad Jr. and his family resided. Andrew Rider had already passed away, thus his interests were represented by his children. [xxvii]

In a similar deed dated the same day, Andrew Rider’s children and the other heirs of Conrad Rutter (Sr.) also acknowledged that Joseph Ritter was the rightful and sole owner of the 188-acre section of the Rutter plantation in Leacock that he and his family resided on. [xxviii]

[i] Estimated birth date based on the facts that Andrew 1) served as witness to Henry Sluyter’s will in 1718 (must be 18 years of age or older to serve as a witness), 2) leased land in 1722, and 3) first child born in 1724.

[v] James Boyles is identified as the husband of Rebecca Rider in 1762 quit claim deeds signed for Conrad Rutter Jr. and Joseph Rutter. Boyles’ name appears in administrative bond and estate inventory for Andrew Rider, both recorded in 1750, indicating that the marriage probably took place before 1750.
